There are two different control area. Global (the one that you changed), and the user (under your profile). User Theme setting will always override Global. You will need to go to your profile to reset ...

I am not sure what you meant by start page.

Typically, by default when someone goes to yoursite.com it will show everyone the same main (home) page. Now you can set that main page to show anything ...

You can do that through Modules and Blocks control. You can set Blocks / Modules that you want Registered Users to see and what Blocks / Modules for guess to see.

look for any background color in css file that have #FFF or #FFFFFF. and remove that line.
