Good so far, but I don't think it is your background too small. Something else is displaying in the space in the header area, so the background is overwritten, maybe.

Have a look in style.css and ...

The 3 background lines are alternatives, so just comment out the 2 that you don't want.

As for the xpadding try it before you worry about it.

The width (assuming that you want fixed width) in the rD3 theme is controlled by the mainstyle.css. In fact that's about all that css file does, control the width, minimum width, centering, etc.
