Can't help much with so little info. If you'd searched you'd find in 8.2b avatar upload is not available and in the upcoming 9.0 it is.

How about when users link to an avatar how do you get a normal pic to automatically resize? is this an option?

An easy Search will find what you need

I used to use Yabb as a forum and it would auto resize the image. Any chances that cpgnuke will do that in the future?

9.0 does checks the size and weight but AFAIK does not resize if too large
