It was very easy for me.
Downloaded the dvd iso.
Booted it up using redhat's amazing graphical installer.
Installed nicely.

Google'd a few days over the couple of years regarding NTFS, FreeType, Samba and nVidia support.
And the last days regarding GUI's for C++ and PHP development, CVS GUI's and some other stuff.

The biggest pain was my audio cards which are special using the superior, real 24bit, VIA chipset (SoundBlaster sucks here) with no-noise ratio's above 105db.

My Marian Marc soundcard still doesn't work though, but 3 out of my 4 installed soundcards is enough Smile

Use Fedora Core 6 on one box and CentOS 5 (x64) on another. Enjoy and welcome to the dark side.

I made the switch to, finally, on my laptop. I have a desktop (slash) server box that has been running Ubuntu for a couple years now.

The only reason why I havent switched my laptop over is because of the kernel issue with my wireless card and bcm43xx drivers. I finally found a fix for it, til the next kernel upgrade, and my wireless internet is SUPER fast thru my laptop now. I hit 17000+kbps down last night.

Ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop. 7.10 on my other box and will keep one box on xp pro for all my games and other crap ive got.

But I have loved the switch over to linux. I've tried them all to and Ubuntu is user friendly with gnome. I really dont care for kde or xfce.
Ive spiced it up with beryl and then tweaked it all over the place and Im still tweaking. But thats to fun of linux, you can do whatever!!

I made the switch on my laptop, a gateway MX7515 AMD 64 4000+ with 1.5GB DDR and ATI x600 graphics card. I tested about 14 distros, and ended up liking Linux Mint the best... its based on Ubuntu/Debian, and so far I friggin love it. I set it up to dual boot with my XP system for now until I ween myself from M$ dependancies. I have to say tho, its VERY refreshing not to have to defrag the HDD and registry every month, and run "optimize" utilities or a bunch of processes (firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware) now I just run a firewall. I still have my other two computers to switch over soon, thinking about PClinuxOS for them.

I've been running different distros on my Desktop for about 3 years now. SuSE, FC, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Mepis, Lindows/Linspire, etc. Right now I've got Kubuntu running. I just bought a laptop and it's time to decide what to run. I'm thinking of making a jump into the world of BSD with PC-BSD for some testing. For fun here's the lappy specs:

Dell Inspiron 1420
Intel Core2Duo 7500 2.2Ghz
2048 MB DDR2 667Mhz RAM
Nvidia 8200gs with 128MB dedicated RAM
Dell Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n (Probably going to be the biggest problem for drivers)
Builtin Bluetooth (May also cause problems)
And of course all the other standard goodies.

I use it and the 2007 version uses kde. If you prefer Gnome, well, someone has configured a Gnome version, remastered it, and now offers it for download. I just tried it out, and I must say, I like it, so far.

I have never really messed with Gnome before, but it does look and "feel" different. I really enjoy the "Live" distributions of Linux... try it before you install it.

Stay inline and get Dragonfly BSD?

I've looked into it, but it's still in very early stages. They're making alot of kernel level changes so it's gonna be awhile before there is a functional system. Sad It's o.k. though, I think PC-BSD or DesktopBSD will do fine for a start!

Thanx warden! I prefer gnome myself, after giving KDE a fair shot.... to me it just seems cleaner and faster. Anyway, thanx for the link!

Hmm it seems the latest distro's suck.

A month back i've configured a new PC with a Asus M2N4-SLI mobo but somehow now it gives APIC kernel panis.

Good section for my new bugs-annoy.us server when it comes online Smile

I'd like to thank warden for the PCLOS gnome link.... I have it running on both my other PC's as dual boots with Xp as well.... t be honest, the only computer that even sees a winXP login these days is my dual boot laptop when I have to run Poser or Bryce 3D, or when I want to use my flashFXP for ftp sessions (I wish they made it for linux)

I'm using dualboot Ubuntu-Windows XP now.
It's just that the ATI drivers aren't perfect for Linux and other reasons.
