I have added the new Downloads Pro module to the CVS. The module is nearing the end of its initial development cycle, so it is to be used AT YOUR OWN RISK. You are able to upgrade your old Downloads module to this new module, however there are a few minor problems as reported here. I hope to have these issues resolved soon; but I advise you to most definitely BACKUP YOUR DATABASE before doing anything!

The module can be downloaded here. If you find any bugs, please report them here.

Expect a final release within 1-2 weeks.

will need the themes files, or are they to be added to the core themes?

Hmm, sorry. CVS Add seems to have skipped that. They're available now.

one issue I came across ... you must disable the old module before uploading the new files or your site will break (at least mine did).

Yes, and then you need to go to Admin -> Modules -> Downloads -> Upgrade

Login as admin and go to the "Modules" page, which will autodetect the new

For clarities sake you may wanna add 'turn off old downloads module, if installed, before uploading files' looks like excellent work so far

i don't see Upgrades in Module Function, am i missing something?

Is there (or will there be) a zip or rar to download this instead of every individual file?

when its ready for release, I am sure it will be added to the doanload section like the other modules, but at this time its basically a beta use at your own risk deal, which are generally the people who know how to use a CVS client.

Alright. I just find that downloading each file to be rather tedious and a waste of time whereas you could download a zip/rar file and unpack it and then upload it a lot easier.

you don't do it individually with a cvs client, thats what the client is for ... but this is a discussion for another thread/forum.
