Not sure if this should be in here or in the CPGBB forum.
The site I run has a busy forum and old forum posts constitute a large proportion of our database. This starts to be a bit of a problem when doing database backups.
I know we have the pruning function which is meant to stop this problem but a lot of our users would like to keep the old posts. We have a read-only archive forum where "Gold" threads are moved to but when these threads are generally the largest it kind of defeats the purpose.
What I'm suggesting is a way to "Archive" threads which moves their contents into a separate database completely independent of the rest of DF. They would then be accessed as read-only threads by a "Archive" module or forum add-on.
What this would mean is that the pruning option could be enabled to keep the forum database tables trim and make backing up easier whilst us allowing people to keep an archive of old posts.
(As some users wouldn't have access to a second database we'd have to include the ability to specify the database/table that the archive is dumped into).
Not sure what you all make of this as there are probably other ways around the problem but this would be quite a useful feature to have.

Not the solution you want, but splitting some forums into a second forum module would ease your problem, like has been done on this site.

I've been looking for exactly the same thing. Can anyone tell me where the pruning code is located so that I can at least take a look at it? I doubt I can really do anything with it, but it's worth a shot.

forums management> edit the forum category > auto pruning is an option there.

Yes, but where is the code?
