i have an html select tag where the option names have accents in them, portugues ones. outside of the tag they display fine, but inside they don't. in firefox they showup as '?' and in ie they show up as squares.

i have made sure that the script is encoded in UTF-8.

i can see that on this site in the language select block on the left 'português' is being displayed fine so it can be done.

does anybody have any ideas?

Probably the script will be, but the page has not been saved as UTF-8,
Use UltraEdit or Notepad2 to check thecorrect script/ page encoding.

Thanks nando,

I feel really stupid about this, you were right that the problem was with the encoding after all.

It seems that if you open a file which is encoded in ANSI with Notepad2 then go through file->encoding and tick UTF-8 then the portugues accented chars go crazy, ie squares and '|' type of thing. This is what caught me offgaurd i assumed(wrongly!) that by changing the encoding of the file the chars would still stay correct, well this is not the case.

but i found a way round this, if you open the file with in another editor window(doesn't have to be with notepad two, i use html-kit) then copy the whole script to the clipboard. create a new file in notepad2 change the encoding of the empty file to UTF-8 and then paste the script into the new notepad2 file then the chars stay correct and this can be saved in the normal way.

hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.
