I contacted my isp to see about getting my upload speed increased to match my download. They said that no ISP can give more than 1mbs upload speed. I know thats bull crap i could give my self 10 mbs up and down if I wouldn't get into trouble. I would love to know why they wont do it.

upload speed can never equal or be greater than download speed. it can be half your download speed at most. But yes there are many ISP which offer upload speed greater than 1mbps.

Just ask for DSL instead of ADSL.
DSL is for commercial use (companies) and costs much more.
However, since it's not asynchronous your upload speed is as fast as your download speed.

But as you already said that you can't afford it, your're stuck with ADSL.

Another thing that surpresses the costs is DSL line-sharing.
You do get your own IP, but in the switch box there could be 50 lines which makes the 20Mbps / 50 = 0.4MBps at times.
If you're lucky and nobody is online, you have the full 20.

I was sad to cancel my DSL a couple of years ago and have to get cable instead.

The reason is that the phone company decided I owed them about $600 from some time when I had a different middle initial and lived on a street I never lived on. (Obviously, my first name is pretty common, and my last name is too.)

So, they thought that they would cancel my service without notice. They said they would be happy to investigate my fraud complaint, which would only take 6-8 weeks to get my service reinstated.

I paid off my real bill and got cable the next day. I've had my problems with it, but nothing that horrendous.

I find that uploading through FTP software can be as low as 24kb yet download speeds of upto 2mb on the same software. Although this is on my own linux box, is there a way to speed up uploading through linux servers?

Melinda <---Has Wildblue Internet Satellite
www.wildblue.com
You think your ISP is bad, if you get caught breaking high-speed satellite's FAP (fair access policy)
They drop you down to Dial up speeds. You do it more times then they allow in a calender year. They Violate your contract and cancel you, and then you owe the rest of the contract amount.
And at $79.95 a month, thats not a very nice penalty.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page: www.wildblue.com/legal/fair.jsp

Upload Threshold ($79.95 month highest package): 5000 MB
Download Threashold ($79.95 a month highest package): 17000 MB

So if your a gamer? Forget Satellite! But if your like me and do not have DSL or Cable options, DIAL UP SUCKS... Satellites the only way to go.

Cable (non-commerical - and not counting a T-1) is the only way to go if you need the larger thresholds ... but the cost and service SUCKS!
We have the worst cable company out here. Confused

Ok I am done ranting.. Embarassed

Australians are very lucky in this argument ... there is a huge forums where almost all ISPs has a representative person posting there.

Immediately you will get the idea about which is good and which is not.

The website includes price comparison, full list of all plans and lot more.

On my side I'm with westnet and i cannot complain at all

Up Stream 384 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 8160 (Kbps.)

You guys surely are lucky. Listen to what we are here in India.

Down 128 kbps and up 64 kbps. Surely a pity!

I just did a speed test on speakeasy.net from the atlanta server my speed was 12,329 kbs download and 732 kbs upload which i guess is one of the fastest connections in the us with out going commercial. The thing the bugs the crap out of me is they say they can not give me more upload when i know good and well they can if the would. I would sacrafice 4 mbs download for it to be switched to upload.

Wireless P2P over neighboring mountain. 1Mb up & down (at a price) but true up throughput is rarely over 768Kb. Radios are a minimum of $600 plus fitting of antenna. System is good, but at mercy of ISP in that too many users assigned per node/antenna on mountain top, and performance suffers at peak times.

Having a big ol' transmitter on roof sure rules out wireless-b indoors Wink

Really annoying aspect is that 6Mb cable is at end of street - 3 houses away. For < 1/3rd the monthly rate. But as local franchise here in Good Ol' USA doesn't specifically say they have to offer service on a private road, they want a 100% return on investment in ONE YEAR - so a cool $35K to install - even though they would get upwards of 20 customers if they installed it! Sucks. DSL is no go (too rural), and satellite is as Melinda states.

That's pretty damn good man. I am in Long Beach, CA (pretty big city with a huge cable company (Charter)). And I have the highest package without going commercial...and I only get this off the speakeasy.net test. We tried DSL a few years back and that was just flat out terrible. Could have changed round here though.

I too just did the speakeasy test and got these results off a Verizon DSL line:

New York Server:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 2895 kbps (361.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 400 kbps (50 KB/sec transfer rate)

Dallas, Texas:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 2900 kbps (362.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 461 kbps (57.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Washington, DC:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 2894 kbps (361.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 377 kbps (47.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Verizon's been fairly nice to me so far. Had cable for a few months, dropped it like a hot potato.
