i see it termed around the boards here and there but is it some module - hack or set of files to upload and config for my DF site?

Just Enable LEO in admin panel. Your .php links get converted into search engine friendly .html links (You should have mod_rewrite enabled in your apache for this to work). The .html files are favorable to the search engine spiders compared to .php files so they get indexed faster.
