Since we talk about servers etc. i can't say this enough Razz
dedicatednow our new hosting provider which gives us the power of this new dedicated server.
Has helped us fast and good within a week time.
If you want also a reliable host which doesn't complain and you have the money for good and reliable services then try them.
Their support replied within a hour and all went smooth in setting up (with thanks to webdev who made the contacts and made it all possible Very Happy )

The person of dedicatenow also has another company Pegasus Web Technologies

For my old host: "DIE !!!"
I paid them $400 a year and they complained about 13% CPU use while their upgrades messed up the server speed which dropped tremendously and they didn't want to listen.
So i give 2 thumbs down to aventurehost.com which was a real 4 months adventure.

You might also add that aventurehost was part of the EV1.net network so people know to steer clear of them as well.

And guess what, aventurehost just comes up with a phpinfo page Laughing

Am I correct in thinking that AventureHOST have something to do with XMB Forums?

Did adventure host offer you a full box [your own dedicated server] or just web space. The reason I ask is because we have a dedicated server through EV1 and have been with them for over a year and have NEVER had a problem with them.

Thanks

I was looking at dedicatednow.com/ dedicated servers and the prices looked really good at first. Then I looked at the setup fee. For the AMD Athlon 64 2800+ package they want a 249.95 setup fee if you want the cheapest monthly price or they charge more monthly for a lower setup fee. It seem's kind of like a scam to me.

Well yes the prices are quite deer (after a year you would have paid for that server sooo many times over) but bandwidth is expensive and they give plenty in the defulat plans (but upgrades are way too expensive), and they have limited space afterall.

However they increase the monthly fees for things like RAM upgrades and HDD upgrades, which is completely unethical and immoral.

Basically they must assume that if people want this, they must be running a business and therefore have disposable income, in other words it is extortion, and there is no way to talk their way out of that, it is a fact plain and simple.

But who else are you going to go with? Most other hosts with "good deals" use virtual hosting, and even effecient implementations such as xen severely limit throughput, negating the main reason for having a dedicatd server in the first place.

The best thing you can do is try to get a half-decent isp that allows good server connections. -OR- if you have enough add revenue, then get a backbone connection. This is out of reach for all but the largest hit-sites mind you.

IF you're going with something yourself then you want to buy at least 3 headless pc's (which'd cost about 15 grand altogeather if you're going with good systems like a 8-cpu tyan mobo to do the dyanmic content generation for instance), have 3 of them with maxed out ram, only bother with hdd space for your fileserver (run thttpd on this one, it uses little resources and can throttle the bandwidth based on directory, but can only serve cgi/html/datafiles).

The database server should have heaps of ram (you might get away with database + dynamic gen on the one pc), and then you'd be looking at about $200 a month for some moderately-l33t bandwidth from a good isp. This will pwn dedicatednow for most cases however (depends on your throughput), and will work out MUCH cheaper.

veggii and mc__ - the use of "scam" and "extortion" are completely inappropriate, and are libelous.

If you have a genuine grievance as a dedicatednow customer, feel free to comment - better still, complain to them.

Otherwise please refrain from speculating on their business practice from a position of ignorance.

I understand where you are coming from Phoenix. In retrospect "scam" might of not been the best word. It is just that I have heard of business's offering web-hosting and dedicated servers and they have had really good prices but a very high setup fee. Those business's also happen to disappear after a month for two. I didn't mean to accuse dedicatednow of such acts though. I have had no personal experience with dedicatednow so I do not know what they are like. Sorry for any confusion or anger that I may have caused.

On a side note, can you sue a minor for slander and libel?

There is no need for speculation on DedicatedNOW - most questions are covered quite openly in its FAQ.

We have been in business since Oct 1997. There are three divisions to our organization: FORTRESS ITX, DedicatedNOW and Pegasushost.

It generously has provided the server for this site for the past 2 years, so we are understandably concerned when people slam it, especially when they have never been a customer.

Their service is fast and good.
They also provide proper kernel upgrades and the speed is ok.
You could choose to pay for that or just get a cheaper dedicated host and hope everything goes well.

Never say something is to expensive when you never used it.

Why? I say if you know what you are talking about then criticism is healthy. Too many people are ignorant and believe that something is a good deal just because it's better than all the rest. Obviously i must sound sarcastic now, but it's true!

Extortion may sound sensationalist, and is wrong if you take it as the legal definiton, but the dictionary definition is spot on. An exorbitant charge. Charging the full price of hardware for that ram upgrade every 3 months is unjust. Anyway, as i said the only reason to go with them (or any hosting company) is if you are not the server admin type, or it is too expensive to get a good isp-server connection. It's a fact, no need to get *emotional* (esp as i was merely being purely objective).

They seem to be well in the price range of dedicated server class. I would definately give them a shot if I needed to move up that road.
