Im not sure if this is the right spot or not...

This tutorial is for people who don't know they can make their windows system a virtual server! It adds nothing to the registry or installs anything!

Using a program called Uniserver (free).. you can have apache, mysql, php, pear and a couple plugins "installed" on your windows machine!
To download, visit this link

SETUP

Once you have downloaded uniserver.. click on the exe
and extract to the directory of your choice.

Once extracted.. you will see this:

Double click on the start.bat file. A DOS screen will pop up and the server has started!

USING THE SERVER

Ok.. so you have the server started.. now what??

If you goto 'My Computer' or Windows Explorer.. you will see you have a new drive.. a W:\ drive. It sets up this virtual drive (which is a clone of the directory you extracted.. well the server files)

Open up the W:\ drive (in most cases) and you will see the directory structure:

You want the WWW drive. That is the directory where all your web access files will be. IE if you want index.htm you will put it in the www directory. The address will be localhost/index.htm

Once you run start.bat your browser will open up and you will see this screen: (I cut it a bit to fit better here)

Apache has started but mySql hasnt. So you need to click 'Run MySQL Server'

Once you click that.. Apache and MySQL will run and you will be all set! Take it from there Smile

This can also be found at noobtutorials.co.uk in the forums Smile

Nope.. doesnt take hardly any memory at all!

Let me just say.. I have 512 megs of ram.. and an athlon 2700...

At one time.. I have this going:

Winamp
DVD Burning
Photoshop
Dreamweaver
UniServer
YIM and MSN
IE
Folding @ Home
AVG

And I dont notice a slowdown (except with the dvd burning but that cause of the program I use Big grin )

The link to the source code seems to be bad. Does anyone have the source and could email it to me? This seems to be what I'm looking for so I don't have a heart attack trying to configure apache and mysql again.

Thanks,

Sritsod

Anyone who wants to develop should be running PHP and whatever DB, server and OS you want to run under (though I mostly develop under Windows and go live under FreeBSD or Linux).

If you want to minimize the hassles you have by developing locally and deploying remotely, you should set up your server to run a virtual host for each site you develop. I have a HOWTO (and even corrected the typos) at

www.dragonflycms.com/F...=8509.html

Note that DJMaze thinks there are some security issues with this. I disagree, but I'm very new to the Dragonfly so you should watch that thread for any additional explanation he has.

I use "WAMP Server". Super fast to set up and usually kept current. Comes with phpMyAdmin, etc.

www.wampserver.com/en/

Apache 2.0.58
PHP 5.1.4 + PECL
SQLitemanager
MySQL 5.0.22
Phpmyadmin

It also allows you to install a HUGE number of modules into PHP and Apache, such as Mod_Rewrite (Enable LEO Locally).

Having set up Apache/PHP/MySQL on my computer 'by hand', I can tell you this was an order of magnitude easier.
