I love spchat because of the block that tells how many users are in the chatroom, otherwise i'd use the ircchat. Anyone willing to port it to 9 theres an 8.2 version out there. thanks

otherwise i would be using it and would port it for 9.0

Well the reason pjirc is used instead of spchat these days is mostly due to server load. With pjirc (used in ircchat module) it uses a java engine to run in and detaches so it's run directly from the client end. This reduces load greatly for the webserver since it's no longer attached to it.
I can understand why you'd want this but I think the consensus is that it's too heavy for a medium to high traffic site.

gotcha. I am still interested because my site is still small, and im pretty sure there was an 8.2 version somewhere. I will try and find it. otherwise i would settle on anything if it had a block with it, maybe theres something more secure out there. ill do some searches

spchat is kinda Bad idea if you have very high traffic site. it can be very high load of mysql so it can slow down site traffic then you lose fast speed in your site. it best to use it when you in dedicated server. it my 2 cents.

spchat does a request to the server each 3-5 seconds
Say 5 SQL queries per request makes 60 queries per minuter per user.
Say 20 people in chat is makes it per minute:
- 240 server requests
- 1200 SQL queries
And that's counted without:
- send messages
- image requests
So 20 people sending 5 messages a minute containing 1 image
- 640 server requests
- 1700 SQL queries
Now you go guess the CPU/Resources load of that

oh my...thats a lot. i guess i'll go with the ircchat. would there be a way to create a block with this that shows how many people are chatting? im not exactly sure how irc works but could there be a code stuck in when the window loads that picks up a user's click and show it in a block?

Wow! That is some load.
I just went and checked out the IRCChat module... it is better than any I have seen as far as IRC goes. However, the reason I used SPChat was because it logged users in with their username and that was that. I just logged into the IRCChat under djmaze... a little dangerous don't you think?
I then used the word {expletive removed}, and was told to keep it to G (checking the filters). So what if I didn't? What can be done? Boot me? I come back with another name. Or, at worst, the user who's name I'm using gets the boot.
I'm not trying to knock down the IRCChat module... I would love to use it. I am simply curious and wanting to know if there is anything that can be done about people imitating others? As I said, that was the MAIN (possibly only) reason I used SPChat.
Thanks.

you came in as "safecracker4hire" and then changed your nick.
| Code:: |
[15:55] *** safecracker4hire (~safecrack@somewhere.ca) joined
[15:56] *** safecracker4hire changed nick to djmaze |
With SPChat you can also fake usernames, so that's no arguement.
The only benefit from SPChat, or any other webbased chat, is that you can easily see how much people are in the room and that you can log the messages in your database.

Thanks for that DJ.... I am installing it right now and going to give it a go.
Actually, the SPChat was configurable to not allow the changing of nicks. Like I said, that was really my only reason for using it.
When I tried to change my nick in IRCChat it did say something like djmaze if a protected nick... if this is your nick, enter password, blah, blah, blah.... but it did let me change the nick anyway. I had some problems with users imitating others with my first Chat module, hence the change to SPChat. It got to the point where noone would even talk to this guy anymore... until it came to light that it was not him making the remarks.
Thanks again for your comments... off to play with IRCChat!
